The Colonial Cottage Garden™ Approach
Turn Your Front Lawn
Into a Garden
From plain lawn to a lush garden for real American life
Why This Approach
Can a Beautiful Garden Fit Into Real Life?

Like most people, I started with a dream of an English cottage garden. By July, it looked like a mess. I had a plain suburban lawn, hot New Jersey summers, a full-time job and a kid.
So I spent years visiting botanical gardens across the U.S. and Europe, testing plants in my own front yard and keeping only what worked. Some gardens were stunning but impossible to maintain. Others were practical but lacked beauty. Slowly, I started seeing a pattern.
I call it the Colonial Cottage Garden™ approach: the romance of English cottage gardens, the enduring structure of estate landscapes and the practicality real homeowners need. It works whether your house is a 1920s Colonial, a 1950s ranch or a new build.

The Formula
Four Layers: From Lawn to Garden
The Colonial Cottage Garden™ approach is a planting framework I developed for turning an ordinary American lawn into a garden that feels abundant but stays organized all year.
It blends the romance of English cottage gardens, the structure of estate gardens, and the practicality needed for modern American life. These traditions don't usually go together; the formula uses structure to keep the romance from turning messy.
The name comes from the house that started it all, but the approach doesn't depend on architecture. It works in front of a 1920s Colonial, a 1950s ranch or a brand-new build. What makes it work is the order of the layers.

1. Green Bones: Evergreens
No English stone walls or old hedges? Evergreens take their place, giving every bed a backbone and your yard height and structure, even in January.

2. Pretty Bones: Flowering Shrubs
Easy flowering shrubs you can find at any nursery, placed so they read as cottage abundance. Plant once, then mostly leave them alone.

3. Grasses: Movement
Set toward the edges of each bed, grasses fill space fast and soften everything when the breeze moves through.

4. Perennials & Annuals: The Cottage Heart
Perennials tucked between the bones come back fuller every year. Scatter annual seeds for the finishing touch, for the price of a packet.
Once the four layers are in place, you're ready for the fun part: roses for romance, and an arch, trellis or bench to frame it all.
